K-6 Instructional Literacy Program

K-6 Instructional Literacy Program
At Mater Catholic Primary School, we follow the NSW English K-10 Syllabus. For those students, not achieving the required standards in literacy, additional support is offered through Minilit and Macqlit intervention programs.

MiniLit (Meeting Initial Needs in Literacy) is a research-based early intervention program designed to support young learners who are struggling with reading. Tailored for students in the early years of schooling, MiniLit provides targeted instruction in phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. The program is structured to offer systematic and explicit teaching methods, ensuring that students build a strong foundation in essential literacy skills. Through engaging, evidence-based activities, MiniLit aims to boost students’ confidence and reading abilities, setting them on a path for academic success. Perfect for small group settings, MiniLit complements classroom instruction and helps bridge the gap for students needing additional support.

MacqLit  is an explicit and systematic reading intervention program for small groups of older low-progress readers. It provides teachers with a comprehensive sequence of lessons that includes all the key components necessary for effective reading instruction: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension. It is ideal for students who fall in the bottom 25% of a standardised reading test or curriculum-based measure, and who have particular difficulties in the area of word recognition.
